A blue-and-white striped awning now hangs at 8130 Lakewood Main St. Under it is a bakery that, until August, Lakewood Ranch knew mostly as a Sunday booth at the Waterside Place farmers' market. A few doors down at 8110, an Irish pub opened in July. Its owners came to the area to run a cocktail bar at Waterside.
So Main Street's two biggest additions of the summer both came by way of Waterside Place. Lakewood Ranch's newer town center ended up working as a testing ground, and the older one gained the businesses that came out of it. Then the fall calendar arrived. Between now and December 20, something is happening on Main Street most weekends.
Bread Bandits opened its Lakewood Ranch storefront on Aug. 1, according to the Observer. It's open seven days a week at 8130 Lakewood Main St. The Sunday stand at the Waterside Place farmers' market is still running.
For anyone who planned Sunday mornings around a loaf of sourdough, the storefront changes things. The Observer opened its story with "The weeklong wait for Bread Bandits' sourdough is over," and that line sums up what changed for the Ranch.
The bakery has grown fast. Owners Jules Thuet and Brad Rutledge moved from Toronto and started out selling at local farmers' markets. About a year later they opened their Sarasota bakery, and the Lakewood Ranch store followed three years after that. They now run two storefronts and two weekly farmers' markets, plus wholesale accounts. Together that adds up to hundreds of loaves a week.
The starter behind every one of those loaves is much older than the business. Thuet told the Observer it has been in his family for more than a century. His grandmother got it from her mother in Alsace, France. His father later brought some of it to Toronto to open a bakery there. Thuet carried it to Sarasota himself in a 3.4-ounce, TSA-compliant bottle. That trip is where the name Bread Bandits comes from.
"I will never forget having to feed the starter during a layover at Hartsfield-Jackson," Thuet said. "Any law enforcement officer would have had every right to question a guy pulling out pre-weighed bags of white powder."
The ingredients come from far away too. The flour is imported from France, and the butter comes from grass-fed dairy cows in France and New Zealand. One of the bakery's many online reviews, quoted by the Observer, credits its croissant with "a million layers of buttery, fluffy, flaky pastry."
He also argues that the bread takes on the place where it's baked. "You could ship our exact flour and recipe to New York, Paris or San Francisco, but the second you mix it here in Sarasota, our local air, water and coastal climate take over," he told the Observer.
The second move covered a shorter distance and filled a space with a longer history. Delany's Public House opened July 23 at 8110 Lakewood Main St., the Bradenton Herald reported. Tory Delany, Darren Shore and Kevin O'Hanlon own it. All three are from Ireland and run several restaurant concepts in New York City. They came to this area to open Allswell Craft Cocktails & Kitchen at Waterside Place.
Delany told the Herald she first came down to visit a friend in January 2020. She came back for an extended stay, and that's when she decided to move.
Main Street regulars will know the address. A pub has filled it for most of the past two decades:
The menu sticks to Irish classics: fish and chips with hand-cut fries, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash. "We also have a delicious lamb shank on the menu," Delany told the Herald. "It's an eight-hour braise. It's a really wonderful dish. Roasted potatoes, string beans." The owners describe their aim as "traditional Irish hospitality" with "Lakewood Ranch elegance."
The room is built for a crowd. The Herald's Aug. 1 follow-up described 350 seats, a full bar, dining and lounge areas, and a stage for live music, with decor and furniture imported from Northern Ireland.
It also has snugs, with a twist. In Victorian-era pubs, a snug was a hidden-away area behind a door or partition, Delany told the Herald. The snugs at Delany's are smaller, more intimate tables and seating that are left open to the room. "So we've recreated, I call it an open snug … little small areas that feel very individual," she said.
Taken one at a time, these are just a bakery opening and a pub opening. Taken together, they show a pattern. Both teams already had Lakewood Ranch customers through Waterside Place before they signed on for Main Street. Bread Bandits built a following at the Sunday market. The Delany's owners built theirs at Allswell. Both then chose storefronts on the same block within days of each other: July 23 and Aug. 1.
The street numbers tell the rest. Delany's is at 8110 and Bread Bandits is at 8130. Main Street's big public events use 8100 Lakewood Main St. as their address. That puts both new tenants right next to the Music on Main stage, BooFest and the holiday events.
That's why the calendar below matters to these two businesses as much as to anyone attending.
The Lakewood Ranch Main Street Market is set up today, Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with more than 70 vendors. After today there are two more market dates this year. Everything else below comes from the official listings on lakewoodranch.com.

Several local organizations run these events. Veteran Air presents BooFest, and Grace Community Church sponsors its Kids' Zone.
Grace Community Church also presents Music on Main, the free block party held on the first Friday of each month. A different local nonprofit receives the proceeds each month. The church also presents Christmas on Main, the last weekend on the list.
From Oct. 30 on, the gaps are short. The longest stretch with nothing on the calendar runs from the Nov. 14 market to Santa photos on Dec. 1. From there, five event dates fall within about three weeks.
The connection runs both ways. Ranch Nite Wednesdays came back to Waterside Place on Oct. 7. The series runs weekly through May 26, 2027, with food, drinks and live music. Bread Bandits' Sunday stand is still at the Waterside farmers' market, and Allswell is still pouring at Waterside.
On the current calendars, the two town centers split the week. Waterside Place has Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. Main Street has first Fridays, two market Saturdays and December's holiday weekends. The same sourdough is sold at both, and the Allswell team now runs a bar at each one.
